How to Choose the Right Armor Level

There are several different levels of protection that can be fitted to an armored vehicle, and each has its own advantages. There are also a number of factors that should be taken into consideration when choosing the level of armor for your armored vehicle, including what you expect to use it for, your budget and the risks that you face on a regular basis.

Body Armor and Vests

If you want to protect your entire body, a full-body armor option is the best choice. These are typically made of soft material that can be worn both externally and under clothing for added protection. They often offer superior coverage and a sleek, modern look.

You can also find lightweight options that are very comfortable to wear and will withstand many rounds of ammunition. These are usually made of polyethylene (PE) which is a type of plastic that is rated as five times stronger than steel and 15 times more abrasion resistant.

NIJ Level IIIA+

If you’re looking for protection that will withstand most handgun and rifle rounds, a Level IIIA+ is your best option. This level of plate is NIJ rated to withstand 7.62mm FMJ rounds with a mass of 147 grains and a velocity of 2780 feet per second, which will defeat most common handguns and rifles.

Level IV

If your budget is tight but you still need protection, a level IV plate may be the best option for you. It will stop most common pistol and rifle rounds, but it won’t offer much in the way of protection against explosions.

B4

A popular option for civilians, this level of armor is a good choice if you’re not planning on shooting any guns in your armored car and you want a lightweight, discreet solution that won’t affect your vehicles performance or acceleration. This level of protection is generally installed with 18-21 mm armored glass and Kevlar sheets for the body.
